I’d like to introduce them to my nephew Nick, who is smart, sweet, and a much better person than I am. He is an exceptional swimmer, he can dance better than anyone I know, he has a terrific sense of humor, can converse with anyone, and is the best nephew you could ask for. My life is so much richer because Nick is in it. And you can’t say that about everybody……..love you, Nick!

Our children with DS deserve the same respect as our children without DS.

We support free speech, but it is not absolute. The authors of this paper have expressed a view that it can be in the greater good to not have children with Down syndrome in our society because of a perceived disadvantage. We believe that crosses the line in terms of what is acceptable because it openly discriminates against the Down syndrome community with a view that such people can be considered a burden. Discrimination in New Zealand is illegal and it is not appropriate for bioethicists to express views that any section of our society is off less worth.

Free speech too much for you? Who are the real Nazis now?

No other group of people would tolerate it but intellectually disabled, not being able to self-advocate very effectively, are open to ongoing prejudice such as this. I think it is so very lame of society to attack this most vulnerable and innocent of peoples and have lost all respect for academia and “bioethicists” once and for all.
